The National Rugby League has taken control of the embattled Gold Coast Titans club as it deals with financial struggles and drug allegations against five of its players.

The club has been placed in voluntary administration by the Directors after conceding it can no longer continue to meet its financial obligations, including staff and player salaries.

It's also dealing with the fallout after Greg Bird, Dave Taylor, Kalifa Faifai Loa, Beau Falloon and Jamie Dowling were issued with court notices to face drug supply charges.

The NRL chief executive, Dave Smith says the decision to take control reinforced the game's commitment to having a club on the Gold Coast.

"The only difference for Titans fans is that they will have the security of knowing their team has a long-term future on the Gold Coast," Smith said.

"This is an important region for rugby league and the Titans remain part of our long term plans for the game.

"This move will give the club a fresh start with the certainty that the players, staff and fans want."

Smith says the Titans board would remain and Graeme Annesley would remain as CEO.

"The NRL will consider longer term ownership options at an appropriate future point, but, for now, our priority is stabilising the club."
