Weapon shipment seized by Lebanon

06:24 am on 29 April 2012

The Lebanese navy is reported to have intercepted a ship carrying arms destined for rebels in Syria.

The ship was stopped off the port of Tripoli in northern Lebanon, where three containers full of weapons and ammunition were confiscated. They included rocket-propelled grenades and rifles.

The Lutfallah II is reported to have come from Libya.

A BBC correspondent in Beirut says Tripoli is a hotbed of support for the Syrian opposition and Damascus has frequently complained that it is used to smuggle arms into Syria.
