More communities brace for flooding in Victoria

21:36 pm on 21 January 2011

A massive, moving inland sea is expected to threaten towns in the Australian state of Victoria for at least another week.

The ABC reports about a quarter of the state is now affected by the floods, which have swamped about 4000 homes.

Communities near the New South Wales border including Murrabit, Benjeroop and Mystic Park are preparing for major flooding on Friday and further downstream floodwater has started to rise at Swan Hill.

Swan Hill mayor Greg Cruickshank says levees should prevent major flooding when the Murray River peaks between Sunday and Tuesday.

Several homes remain at risk in the town of Beulah in the west of the state, where residents were evacuated on Friday morning.

Nearby Jeparit is also on high alert, with authorities fearing the swollen Wimmera River could burst its banks.

Floodwaters have isolated Pyramid Hill and Kerang.
