One person has died and several were injured in a serious crash on Ashhurst Road, near Bunnythorpe in Manawatū.
Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash about 2.15pm on New Year's Eve.
Four other people had injuries ranging from critical to serious, and were transported to hospital.
The incident brought the unconfirmed holiday road toll to 10.
The Serious Crash Unit had examined the scene and investigations were continuing.
Police called for anyone who saw a dark-coloured Ford Ranger and a Toyota Yaris in the Bunnythorpe area from 2pm on 31 December to call or log into its 105 service, quoting reference number 241231/0311.
