A neighbour in northern Hawke's Bay said she felt for the family of a young man found dead in her rural road.

Police are treating the death as unexplained at this stage.

It took place on Matahorua Road, which branches off State Highway Two near Lake Tutira.

Gaynor Chrystall lives just up the road and said the body was discovered in a ditch by the driver of a milk tanker.

She did not know the identity of the young man.

Police wanted to hear from anyone who was in the Matahorua Road-Shines Fall area at the weekend or this morning.
