Confidence in the jobs market rose to its highest level, since September 2008, although it is still below the September 2007 peak.

The Westpac McDermott Miller Employment Confidence Index rose to 111.5 in the September quarter, from just below 110 points in the June quarter.

That is its highest level since September 2008, but still well below the peak at nearly of 135.9 points.

A reading above 100, shows optimists outnumber pessimists.

Economist at Westpac Michael Gordon said he expects employment confidence will continue to improve for some time yet, even though the economy has already passed its peak rate of growth.
