19:25 pm on 27 May 2013

A former nurse who deliberately lit two fires at an Australian nursing home has pleaded guilty to 11 counts of murder.

The four-week trial of Roger Dean was due to start in the New South Wales Supreme Court in Sydney on Monday.

Dean was charged days after the fire which ripped through the Quakers Hill nursing home early on 18 November 2011.

The 37-year-old also pleaded guilty to eight counts of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

There were more than 80 residents in the home when the fire started. Some victims died during the fire and others after it as a result of their injuries, the ABC reports.

Family and friends of the 11 elderly victims were in court to see him change his plea.

Elly Valkay, whose mother was killed, said it the best outcome and her prayers that Dean would stand up and say 'guilty' to all charges have been answered.

Dean will be sentenced at a later date.
