06:10 am on 17 May 2011

An MP in Niue is conceding that the former Premier Toke Talagi is likely to have the numbers to form a new government this morning.

The Legislative Assembly is meeting for the first time since the general election to elect a new speaker and premier.

MP Terry Coe says his camp will nominate Togia Sioneholo for premier and John Operator Tiakia as speaker.

Mr Coe says there are currently eight members on his side, while Toke Talagi's camp has ten or 11.

But he says they will continue to lobby members until the meeting.

"Hopefully we can make some headway in the assembly but it doesn't look like we've got the numbers but you never know. Some of them are still saying they're not sure which side they're going for."

Toke Talagi says he will not comment until after the meeting.
