A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has shaken the top of the South Island

It was centred 30km west of Blenheim at a depth of 49km, Geonet says.

The quake struck at 10.11am and Geonet described it as moderate strength.

More than 4000 people reported feeling the tremor.
