New Zealand and the United States have signed the so-called Wellington Declaration to mark closer co-operation between the two former allies.

The partnership commits the two countries to working more closely on practical projects in the Pacific, with a focus on renewable energy, and natural disaster readiness and response.

The declaration also commits to a focus on regular high-level political dialogue and annual military talks at an officials level.

The deal was signed by the New Zealand foreign minister, Murray McCully, and the visiting US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, at Parliament.
