The Vanuatu's Opposition has called on the government to abolish all "acting" positions and appoint qualified public servants as permanent heads of departments.

Our correspondent in Port Vila said most of the 13 directors general posts had been vacant since they were removed by the then new government in 2016.

The leader of the opposition, Ismael Kalsakau, said it was demoralising for a senior public servant to "act" in a position for too long a period.

Mr Kalsakau said failing to make permanent appointments also undermines productivity.
