Waitangi has been listed as New Zealand's first wāhi tūpuna.
Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act, wāhi tūpuna identify places that are important to Māori for their ancestral significance and their associated cultural and traditional values.
The Waitangi National Trust says Waitangi is New Zealand's most important historic site with significance to all New Zealanders and it's appropriate it was selected as the first wāhi tūpuna.
A special ceremony was held today in Waitangi to mark the listing.
