New Zealand musician Chris Knox is responsive and no longer in pain as he recovers from a stroke suffered last week.
Knox, 56, is also known as a writer, reviewer and cartoonist.
He remains in the Stroke Unit at Auckland Hospital after falling ill on Thursday.
In a statement, Knox's partner Barbara Ward and his children John and Leisha Ward-Knox say they have been overwhelmed with support.
However, a family spokesperson, Roy Martyn, says it is still too early to predict the ramifications of the stroke with any degree of accuracy.
