Crews were called to the scrub fire near Newcombes Road and Amberley Beach shortly after 6am.

Four crews and a helicopter were used to fight the blaze, which covered 15,000sq/m.

The blaze in the Hurunui District was reported to have covered an area of about 100m by 150m.

The spokesperson said no homes had been under threat but fine but that windy conditions had contributing to the fire's strength.
