Police in Hutt Valley have arrested a man over a ram-raid in which a stolen excavator was used to smash into a service station.

The excavator, which had been stolen from a nearby construction site, caused extensive damage to the Wainuiomata building during the burglary in the early hours of 16 May.

"This type of offending is not acceptable and the damage that it caused will not be tolerated," Hutt Valley prevention manager Inspector Haley Ryan said in a statement.

A 34-year-old man arrested at a Wainuiomata address will appear in the Hutt Valley District Court next Thursday charged with unlawful taking, burglary and criminal damage to property.
