A second harbour crossing in Auckland is a step closer, as transport officials begin work to decide the route.
Transport Minister Simon Bridges has asked the Transport Agency to put together a business case that includes construction dates and possible funding options.
The Government said in 2013 that its preferred option was a tunnel under the harbour from Auckland's viaduct to the North Shore.
The Transport Agency estimated the crossing would cost between $4 and $6 billion and could include heavy rail.
The crossing would probably be needed between 2025 and 2030, depending on freight and traffic growth.
