The man who has led Bougainville for the past decade is now in the final days of his presidency, as the region starts counting the votes from last month's election.

John Momis has had a political figure in Bougainville affairs since the late 1960s, when as a Catholic priest he helped write the Papua New Guinea constitution.

He was a member of the PNG parliament for Bougainville, had served in the PNG Cabinet, been the premier and later governor of Bougainville.

It's been a long and often trying career, dominated by the civil war and its aftermath.

John Momis spoke with Don Wiseman, who began by asking how well the recent election had gone, in his view.
