The team wants to meet decision-makers after the changes brought about by the election of Emmanuel Macron as new president and the formation of a new French government.

It wants to have talks with both the president's as well as the government's official dealing with the decolonisation process and the attribution of regal powers.

A meeting of the pro-independence FLNKS movement this week called for direct talks with Paris on the issues.

These would be separate to the deliberations with the anti-independence camp being held regularly under the auspices of the French state as the guarantor of the decolonisation process outlined in the Noumea Accord.

The planned Paris trip comes just days after the leaders of three loyalist parties showed renewed unity and met French leaders, including the overseas minister Annick Girardin.

Observers say the pro-independence camp is posied to consolidate as the election of a new Congress president looms.

The local newspaper Les Nouvelles caledoniennes says the former FLNKS head Roch Wamytan is being considered as a candidate in the election expected in about two weeks.
