One dead, baby injured in East Coast crash

A person has died and four others - including a baby - are in hospital after a car went over a bank north of Gisborne.

Police said the car, with five people inside, veered off State Highway 35, north of Te Araroa.

One person died at the scene.

A baby was seriously injured and was flown to Waikato Hospital.

The three other occupants were in a moderate condition in hospital.

In a separate incident, two women were taken to Waikato Hospital after the motorbike they were riding went off a cliff.

The crash happened at a private property on Umutawa Road in Pukeatua around 11.30am.

Police said the women had moderate injuries.
