Police have reiterated their call not to share unverified information on social media after the launch of an inquiry into sex assaults in Wellington.
A small number of complaints have been lodged with police after a flood of allegations online last week about rape, sexual assault, and violence by a group of musicians in the Capital.
Detective Sergeant Stephen Wescott said since then, people who have nothing to do with the allegations have been accused of being the offenders on social media.
"We know operations like this one create significant concern in the community.
"This concern is absolutely warranted. However, we are again urging people to come to police if they have concerns and avoid sharing identifying information on social media."
He said the police investigation - Operation Emerald - was ongoing.
