Ship with 32 people on board missing off Santa Cruz in Solomon Islands

16:22 pm on 25 May 2012

A search is underway in the isolated Santa Cruz Islands in the southeast of Solomon Islands for a ship that is two days overdue.

The vessel, 201, a freighter converted from a fishing trawler, is believed to be carrying 17 passengers and about 15 crew.

Our correspondent in Lata, George West, says the ship regularly calls at the Santa Cruz Islands, in Temotu Province, to supply basic commodities.

He says a light plane has been combing the area for signs of the vessel.
