Labour Party leader David Cunliffe says the Government's claimed crackdown on tax dodgers is little more than election-year chest-beating.

Revenue Minister Todd McClay said on Friday that Inland Revenue recovered nearly $100 million last year from tax evaders and avoiders.

Mr Cunliffe says collecting just $100 million of an estimated $6 billion in unpaid tax each year is not good enough. He says the problem is far deeper and more systemic than the Government is willing to confront.

The Labour leader says his party will introduce a capital gains tax and tax reform relating to trusts if it gets into power.
