Large waves generated by strong westerly winds off Australia are now pummelling New Zealand's West Coast.
MetService says the waves are moving up to Whanganui and Taranaki.
Locals on the west coast in the north of the North Island will see the 'long waves' hit the beaches later today.
MetService has warned the waves could catch people unaware, and people needed to be careful in and near the water.
The waves are expected to be three metres high today, reducing to two metres on Wednesday.
Sets of significantly bigger waves could also roll in, catching people out.
