Commonwealth Games 2010

Chance for more NZ medals in Delhi

12:15 pm on 12 October 2010

New Zealand teams and athletes can secure medals at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Tuesday.

New Zealand has 25 medals so far, including two gold, with the competition due to finish on Thursday.

Rugby sevens, netball, athletics, squash and hockey all have medals in sight on day nine.

The sevens team showed good form on the first day and will play Wales in quarterfinal action, before a show-down with either England or Samoa. The winner of that clash will be favoured for gold.

The Silver Ferns are favoured to beat Jamaica in their netball semi-final, while Australia should be too strong for England in the other match.

The women's doubles pairing of Jacklyn Hawkes and Joelle King play an Australian combination in the women's squash doubles semifinals, while two New Zealand combinations meet in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.

The New Zealand men's hockey team are unlikely to beat Australia in their semifinal - their last win against them was in 1999 - so a clash against either England or India is pending in the bronze medal match.

On the track, Nick Willis will attempt to defend his 1500m title against an even field that also includes Adrian Blincoe, while Stuart Farquhar has a shot at a medal in the javelin.
