Four people with Covid-19 in New Zealand are being ventilated, but the number of people in hospital with the coronavirus has dropped.

There were 20 new cases of Covid-19 reported today. Twenty new cases were also reported yesterday, down from 28, 49 and 75 on the previous three days.

The number of people in hospital with Covid-19 also dropped from 43 yesterday to 38 today. Sixteen are in Middlemore Hospital, 13 in Auckland Hospital and nine in North Shore Hospital.

Dr Ashley Bloomfield said six of those 38 people are in ICU or HDU and four of them are on ventilators.

Covid-19 modeller Shaun Hendy says he's strongly encouraged by the falling number of new daily cases.

Professor Hendy said that means the virus is being starved of new contacts to infect, though it remains unclear whether the 'tail' of the outbreak will drag on or drop sharply.
