13:34 pm on 18 May 2005

Fiji is to send another 90 troops to Iraq to provide security for the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad and its senior officials.

The Daily Post says the troops will be in addition to the 134 who left last weekend for a week's familiarisation in Kuwait before replacing Fijian troops who have been in Iraq since last November.

Another 53 soldiers left for the Sinai yesterday to join the 330 Fiji troops already on peacekeeping duties there.

The military spokesman, Captain Neumi Leweni, says Fiji has been providing troops to monitor the border between Israel and Egypt as part of the American-funded Multi-national Force and Observers since 1982.

Meanwhile, the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has flown to East Timor for a farewell parade for Fiji troops who are ending their tour of duty there.
