New Year rain to finally ease

06:13 am on 3 January 2016

Severe weather warnings remain in place for Northern and Western parts of the country, although the rain is expected to ease this morning in most places.

More heavy rain battered Northland, Auckland, and Mount Taranaki overnight, and MetService said showers would continue into late morning before easing.

Periods of rain are expected to continue in Bay of Plenty until the early afternoon.

In the South Island, periods of heavy showers will continue in north-west Nelson, Buller and the Paparoa Range, easing later this morning.
