Systemic issues blamed for Kiribati ferry disaster

A Pacific maritime researcher says more aid money should be diverted to develop sustainable shipping in the region to avoid tragedies like the recent Kiribati ferry disaster.

Peter Nuttall says such a disaster was waiting to happen, has happened before and will likely happen again.

At least 80 people are missing presumed dead after the MV Butiraoi sank last month en route from the island of Nonouti to Tarawa

Dr Nuttall, is an advisor to the Micronesian Centre for Sustainable Transport says there needs to be a seachange in sea transportation around the Pacific.
