Queen's Birthday Weekend is over with no road deaths reported.
The official counting period began at 4pm on Friday and ended at 6am on Tuesday.
It is the first nil toll for a holiday period since records began in 1956, when there was one death.
As of late Monday, overall Queen's Birthday weekend crash numbers were down by 13% on last year and about 20% on the average for the past three years.
Police say a holiday period with no road fatalities is a fantastic result.
Superintendent Paula Rose said it is something that those involved in road safety have been working towards for a long time.
She said several factors contributed, including overt enforcement tactics by the police and a better standard of driving in general.
Ms Rose told Morning Report that the road toll has steadily diminished since last October and this year's toll is down 30% compared with last year.
Lowering the speed tolerance to 4km per hour over the limit for holidays helped reduce that toll, she says.
However, Transport Minister Steven Joyce and Police Minister Judith Collins caution against reading too much into the weekend result, saying there is still work to be done to reduce the road toll.
