Niue's Speaker says he will quit politics when the assembly is officially dissolved at the end of the week.

The Premier will gazette the dissolution of the House on April the 8th, so preparations can get underway for the general election on May 7th.

The Speaker Atapana Siakimotu says it's time for him to pack up, as he won't be standing again, after almost nine years of service.

He says it's time to let someone else have a go at the job.

"I've been thinking about it, but it's just timely that the sitting of the assembly it will be renewed on the 7th, and so I thought that it will also be a good time to leave the post, and move on - do something else."
