Fiji's Emperor Gold Mining Company has asked the government to subsidise the cost of fuel, saying it is a major financial burden.
The Fiji Times quotes the company's general manager, Sean O'Connor, as saying discussions on the issue have been held with government representatives.
He says fuel makes up a major part of the expenses of the company and they are looking forward to a positive response from the government.
Earlier, Emperor had announced it had abandoned plans to mine 800,000 tonnes of ore because of high costs.
Instead, it will mine only high grade ore but this could see a decline in Fiji's annual gold production.
