Police want the public's help following a fatal crash on State Highway 2 at Apata, near Katikati in Bay of Plenty on Monday morning.

A person was found in a white 2003 Nissan Vanette unresponsive in the driver's seat following a single-vehicle crash just before 11am.

Medical assistance was provided, but the driver was unable to be revived.

Police said after the crash, the vehicle likely sat facing oncoming traffic on the busy highway for about an hour with its headlights and windscreen wipers on.

They want to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle, registration number KHS 980, or observed its movements beforehand, particularly between 9.30am and 11am.

When questioned by RNZ about what the vehicle had crashed into, the police media team said it was not information passed on to them.

''It will be part of the investigation into the crash.''
