A month after Solomon Trader ship grounding, salvage begins

16:05 pm on 5 March 2019

It's exactly a month since a bulk loader ran aground in Solomon Islands, and the salvage operation has only just swung into action.

The ship got stuck on a reef in Rennell while loading bauxite during a cyclone, and has since spilt about 100 tonnes of oil into a world heritage marine area.

The head of the National Disaster Management Office, Loti Yates, says the response is now fully underway, with salvage crews and equipment set up on Rennell.

But he told Jamie Tahana they're yet to pump any of the remaining 600 tonnes of oil off the ship.
