Curating wine with music

The Auricle Sonic Arts Gallery in Christchurch “draws on the idea of synaesthesia: the crossing of the senses, which is the kind of thing that comes to mind when you’re thinking about the way that sound and taste could interact”, says Jo Burzynska, a leading wine writer and sound artist.

The gallery is a world-first; Burzynska says she got a feeling that there was something going on between wine and music and to make sure it wasn't just her own interests amalgamating, she began testing the wine/art concept on friends and then progressed to wine and music matching workshops for industry professionals.

The wine list at the exhibitions are curated to suit each event, “Things like the pinot noir that’s on the list, I’ve put on the wine list that it’s for the quieter moments,” Burzynska says.
