A Charles Frederick Goldie painting has sold for a record auction price in Auckland.
Kawhena, the only painting Goldie did of Ngati Mahuta kaumatua Hone Kawhena, went to a private buyer for $733,000 on Wednesday night.
International Art Centre director and auctioneer Richard Thomson says the price beat the 1995 auction record of $704,000 for a Colin McCahon painting.
The previous auction record for a Goldie painting, Forty Winks, was $573,000 dollars.
It was owned by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and sold in 2010.
