La Richardais - which has 22 crew onboard - called for assistance on Sunday night after losing propulsion off the coast of Raglan.

The oil and gas support vessel Skandi Emerald went to its aid and towed the bulk carrier to about two nautical miles offshore from Port Taranaki before detaching at 2pm this afternoon.

Port head of operations Ashley McDonald said its three tugs towed La Richardais into a berth.
