Westpac centralising 250 jobs in Auckland

Westpac plans to shift 250 jobs from Wellington to Auckland to consolidate its technology and product marketing team.

The bank has acquired more floor space at its headquarters in Auckland and will base the team there from next year.

The move was taken after a new opportunity arose to acquire more floor space at the bank's headquarters in Auckland's Britomart precinct.

It says all affected Wellington employees have 12 months to decide whether they want to be reimbursed for moving north or take redundancy.

Westpac says there won't be an overall fall in job numbers and the shift doesn't affect the number of bank branches in Wellington.

Westpac NZ experience hub general manager, Karen Silk, said to centralise teams in Auckland offered an opportunity to more efficiently deliver services.

"Westpac NZ will continue to remain strongly committed to Wellington with 12 branches and over 300 banking staff in the region," she said.

"We look forward to maintaining a corporate presence at two offices in Wellington, with employees from a variety of functions including consumer and business banking. We also continue to be a strong supporter of the Westpac Wellington Rescue Helicopter."
