American Samoa health authorites confirm first victim of dengue fever

LBJ Hospital in American Samoa has confirmed that a person died from dengue fever over the weekend.

The dengue victim was a man in his early 20's earlier admitted to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit with advanced stages of dengue.

He died early Sunday morning.

This is believed to be the territory's first dengue death in several years.

A report issued by the Department of health in may said that there were 16 confirmed dengue cases between January and April.

The department has stepped up awareness efforts about dengue, stressing that controlling mosquito breeding sites is a key to preventing spread of the diseases which are transmitted by mosquitoes.
