Submissions pour in on free camping bylaw

16:32 pm on 22 September 2015

Nearly 200 submissions have been received on Christchurch City Council's proposed freedom camping bylaw.

The council proposed the bylaw in July, after a summer of discontent culminating in confrontations between freedom campers and residents.

It would designate areas where freedom camping is allowed, including on a restricted basis, and where it is banned.

A council spokesperson said 190 public submissions had been received with a large number from Akaroa residents.

A panel will hear the submissions next month, and if the bylaw is adopted, it will be in place in time for summer.
