Parliament looks back - Parihaka and women MPs

Most of the time MPs debate about the future, arguing the merits of proposed legislation and the potential impact it will have. 

But sometimes they look to the past to remember milestones and mistakes. 

Last week MPs marked the centenary of women being able to enter Parliament with the passing of the Women’s Parliamentary Rights Act in 1919. 

They also passed Te Pire Haeata ki Parihaka / Parihaka Reconciliation Bill which formalises the Crown apology for its invasion of the Taranaki settlement of Parihaka in the mid-1860s.
