A BYO alcohol trial for the Northern Knights' two Ford Trophy one-day cricket fixtures at Mt Maunganui's Bay Oval is over before it started, Radio New Zealand reports.
Acting on initial advice from law enforcement authorities that the option of BYO was available and legal, Northern Districts advised the public of the trial on Monday.
But updated advice yesterday from the local police means the BYO initiative for the Ford Trophy matches scheduled on New Year's Day and January 4th will not go ahead as planned.
The venue will instead go back to serving liquor from licensed vendors within the ground.
Western Bay of Plenty Police acting Area Commander Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair said police had re-assessed the initial advice given and advised Northern Districts that this trial, for these matches, would have likely breached alcohol-related laws.
