Crews are battling a fire that destroyed a hayshed and spread to four haystacks on a rural mid-Canterbury property.
About 28 firefighters from around the region are fighting the blaze on Maronan Road in Winslow, near Ashburton.
The were called to the scene just after 6am.
The fire has spread to four large haystacks containing about 9500 bales and one hayshed has been destroyed.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said a slight wind change put one of the crews in danger and they have pulled back due to the amount of smoke being produced.
Four water tankers are at the scene in case in case of water supply problems.
Crews will be on rotation throughout the day until the fire has been contained, which Fire and Emergency said could take some time.
