Five people have been taken to hospital - two in a critical condition - following a crash in the Manawatū town of Bunnythorpe this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 2.15pm.

St John said two people in a critical condition have been airlifted to Wellington Hospital.

Three people in a serious condition have been taken to Palmerston North Hospital by ambulance.

Police said the crash happened on Ashhurst Road, which runs between Bunnythorpe and Ashhurst. The road is now closed.

"Traffic is being diverted while emergency services respond and Serious Crash Unit conduct a scene examination," they said.
