ANZ Bank confident of successful defence in fee case

ANZ Bank says it will vigorously defend itself against a mass legal action over bank fees.

Lawyers are bringing a class action on behalf of 13,000 ANZ Bank customers, who believe the fees they have been charged have been exorbitant.

ANZ retail managing director Kerri Thompson said she is confident the bank can successfully defend itself.

The action has so far cost the Australian firm Litigation Lending Services nearly $500,000 in legal fees.

Managing director Michelle Silvers says she expects to spend millions of dollars on each case.

So far, 27,000 customers have signed to claim back millions of dollars in overdraft, credit card and dishonour payment fees from several major banks.

Paul Gillette from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers said the case against ANZ will go to court in December.
