A team of New Zealand police officers running programmes on domestic violence in the Pacific says the response from their Pacific colleagues is positive.

Samoa, Kiribati, Tonga and the Cook Islands are taking part in the Prevention of Domestic Violence Programme, an initiative by the regional police commissioners and funded by NZAID.

The New Zealand officers are working alongside local officers, as well as government agencies and NGOs involved with victims of domestic violence.

One of the New Zealand officer's involved in the programme, Inspector Samasoni Malaulau, says the response has been really encouraging.

"There are lots of barriers, but there are also lots of champions that we are looking at, and within the police force there's lots of leaders wanting to do something about domestic violence."
