Fijian boxing community mourns the passing of rising star Ubayd Haider

There is shock and disappointment in the Fiji boxing community as the news of the death of one of its most promising talent is shared across the country and the Fijian diaspora.

Ubayd Haider, formerly known as Nathan Singh, collapsed outside the ring after a TKO defeat to China's, Australia-based fighter Runqi Zhou on 26 October.

He was fighting for his country for a shot at the IBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title under South Pacific Boxing Promotions - headlined by former All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams as chief guest - at Nadi's King Charles Park.

He was admitted to Lautoka Aspen Hospital and underwent urgent brain surgery.

Haider remained in coma until he passed away on Monday morning.

Fiji Amateur Boxing Association chairman Panapasa Daunakamakama said Haider was a humble and hard working young man, who did his club and his family proud.

Fiji's Sports Minister has given his assurance to local media of a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Fiji Boxing Update Facebok group, with almost 53,000 members, has been flooded with messages of condolences from people of all walks of life.

The Fijian boxing communitty is mourning his passing, and Haider will be laid to rest today.
