Samoa NGOs back plan for guaranteed women's seats

05:59 am on 16 January 2012

Samoa NGOs are supporting the government's plan to guarantee seats in Parliament for women.

The move, announced by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi last year, will ensure 10 percent of Parliament seats are occupied by women.

The President of the Samoa Umbrella of Non Government Organisation, Va'asilifiti Moelagi Jackson, says the change is timely, though she would prefer 30 per cent.

The Samoa Observer reports Va'asilifiti as saying before a change is made, the government should consider signing up to ratify the UN Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
