6.2 earthquake hits PNG and Solomon Islands

The US Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.2 earthquake hit south of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands this morning but no tsunami alert was issued.

The USGS says the quake hit 110 kilometres southwest of Arawa, the capital of Bougainville province in Papua New Guinea, and about 150 kilometres southwest of Chirovanga in Solomon Islands.

The US Geological Survey says the quake was 414 kilometres deep.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
