Fiji's military says the first steps have been made in re-engaging with the United States Army, following a visit to Suva by a senior US Army official.
Fiji's military commander Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga met with the Deputy Commander of the US Army in the Pacific Major General James Pasquarette.
Since the 2006 coup Fiji has focused on building military ties with other nations including China and Russia.
The Fiji government says General Pasquarette re-affirmed the United States' commitment to assist Fiji's military and defence sector in the areas of peacekeeping operations and humanitarian assistance and risk reduction.
They also discussed other areas of cooperation focusing on training and capacity building.
