Officials to assess damage in flood-hit Fiji islands

09:37 am on 6 April 2010

A team of disaster management and district officials has flown to the island of Ovalau in Fiji to ascertain reports of severe flooding hitting several villages on the island.

The National Disaster Management Office DISMAC has received reports that Ovalau was hit by flooding over the weekend.

An official says it has not been possible to establish direct communication with the villages that were affected.

FijiLive reports local radio reports say two villages on the island were badly hit by flooding caused by heavy rain.

Fiji's weather office issued a flash flood warning for low-lying areas over the Easter long-weekend because of a slow moving trough of low pressure.
